Edinburgh Steiner School is a day school educating children of both sexes between the ages of 3½ and 18 years. Located in a suburb of Edinburgh, it offers places to just 350 pupils and aims to create a welcoming and caring community for students of all abilities.
The school operates upon the principles of the Steiner Waldorf curriculum, on which over 1000 independent schools across the world operate. Steiner schools offer a holistic approach to education, interweaving academic subjects with artistic and practical ones. Subjects are taught within a wider context and skills are developed to balance the right and left hemispheres of the brain. Alongside logic and reasoning skills, there is also a focus on developing flexible thinking, imagination and creativity, to assist in creating rounded adults who can contribute to wider society. It promotes education within the “three Hs” of Hand, Heart and Head, which complement traditional academic principles.
Edinburgh Steiner accepts admissions throughout the school year and recommends prospective pupils and their parents spend time at the school before applying. A Steiner education is distinctive and may not appeal to every parent. Pupils of all ages are assisted when settling into the school and it has a noteworthy pastoral care system which aids students’ development. The teachers at Edinburgh Steiner are deeply committed to the pupils in their care and participate in the social community of the school.
