Howell’s School Llandaff is a day school, which caters for pupils between the ages of 3 and 18. Primarily a girls’ school, it will accept boys into the Sixth Form. Situated in Cardiff, Howell’s has all of the advantages of being located in a city.

The school was founded in 1860, from the proceeds of a bequest from Thomas Howell, a wealthy sixteenth century merchant. Howell’s School Llandaff is a members of the Girls’ Day School Trust.

Prospective pupils are required to undertake various forms of age-appropriate assessment. Play activities are used to determine if the youngest children are ready for the Nursery School at Howell’s School, Llandaff. An extension of these activities is used to assess potential new reception and Year 1 and Year 2 pupils. Older children are expected to sit written examinations in English, Mathematics and non-verbal reasoning. In Year 7, the assessment process includes an interview and a scholarship examination. Prospective Senior School entrants (Years 8-11) must take written papers in Mathematics and English, as well as attend an interview with the School principal, to assess the pupil’s communication skills. Admittance into the Sixth Form at Howell’s School Llandaff is entirely dependent on GCSE results. Students must have attained 6 GCSEs with A*-B grades in their chosen A-level subjects.
